What is a QR code?

A QR code — short for "Quick Response" code — is a square, two-dimensional barcode that a phone camera can read in an instant. It was invented in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave to track parts on car assembly lines, where an ordinary striped barcode simply could not hold enough information. Because a QR code stores data across a grid of black and white squares rather than a single row of lines, it packs far more in and can be scanned from any angle.

That capacity is why QR codes are now everywhere: a single code can hold a web address, a paragraph of text, contact details or payment information. Modern iPhones and Android phones read them straight from the built-in camera app, with no separate scanner to install — which is what turned QR codes from a factory tool into an everyday bridge between print and the web.

How QR codes work

Every QR code is a grid of small squares called modules, and their black-or-white pattern is simply your data written in binary. A few parts of that grid are always reserved so a camera can lock onto the code quickly and correctly:

  • Finder patterns — the three large squares in the corners. They tell a scanner "this is a QR code" and which way up it is.
  • Alignment and timing patterns — smaller markers that help the reader correct for angle, curve and distance.
  • The quiet zone — the empty margin around the code. Without it, a scanner can struggle to find the edges.
  • Error correction — spare data woven through the code using a maths technique called Reed–Solomon, so it still reads if part is damaged.

When you point a camera at the code, it locates the three corner squares, straightens the image, reads the module grid back into binary, uses the error-correction data to fix any misreads, and finally decodes the result — usually opening a link or showing text. All of that happens in a fraction of a second, which is exactly where the "quick response" name comes from.

What you can put in a QR code

A QR code is just text, so you can encode almost anything short. The trick is knowing the little prefix that tells a phone how to treat what it reads. Paste any of these into the box above:

For anything you want people to act on, keep it short. A tidy link scans faster and more reliably than a long one stuffed with tracking parameters, so shorten the URL before you encode it where you can.

Understanding error-correction levels

Error correction is what lets a QR code survive a scratch, a coffee ring or a logo dropped on top of it. It works by storing redundant copies of your data, so a reader can rebuild the parts it cannot see. You choose how much redundancy to add, and there are four standard levels:

  • Level L (Low) — recovers about 7% of the code. The least dense option; fine for clean, on-screen links.
  • Level M (Medium) — recovers about 15%. A sensible default that balances resilience and density for most uses.
  • Level Q (Quartile) — recovers about 25%. A good pick for codes that will be printed and handled.
  • Level H (High) — recovers about 30%. Best for harsh spots — packaging, outdoor signage, or when a logo covers part of the code.

There is a trade-off. Higher correction adds more modules, so the pattern gets denser and needs to be printed a little larger to stay readable. If a code will live somewhere clean and be scanned up close, M is plenty. If it will be printed small, handled a lot, or partly covered, step up to Q or H.

Tips for QR codes that scan reliably

A QR code only earns its keep if people can actually scan it. These habits keep your codes readable in the real world:

  • Keep strong contrast. Dark modules on a light background scan best. Avoid light-on-dark and never use two similar tones.
  • Do not invert the colours. Most readers expect dark on light; a light code on a dark background can fail on older phones.
  • Leave the quiet zone. Keep clear space around the code — do not crop right to the edge or crowd it with text.
  • Size it for the distance. A rough rule is a scan distance about ten times the code's width, so a 3cm code reads comfortably from around 30cm.
  • Export large enough for print. Use the Large or Extra large size so the PNG stays sharp when placed in a design or sent to a printer.
  • Shorten the link. Less data means a simpler, more forgiving pattern that scans faster.
  • Always test before you print. Scan the final image with more than one phone, then check it again once printed at real size.

Can I change the QR code colours?

Yes. Set any foreground and background colour with the two pickers. Just keep good contrast — a dark code on a light background scans most reliably. Very light colours or two similar tones can stop the code from reading.

Why won't my QR code scan?

The usual causes are weak contrast, a code printed too small, no quiet zone around it, or too much data crammed in. Increase the size, keep dark-on-light colours, leave a clear margin, and shorten the link. Raising the error-correction level to Q or H also helps in rough conditions.

How much data can a QR code hold?

At the largest version a QR code can store roughly 7,000 digits, 4,300 letters and numbers, or about 2,900 bytes of data. In practice you should stay far below that — the more you encode, the denser and harder to scan the code becomes, so short links and brief text always work best.

Can I add a logo in the middle?
