For a percentage discount the saving is price x discount / 100. For a fixed amount off, the saving is simply that amount, capped at the price. Sales tax, if entered, is applied to the discounted price, because tax is normally charged on what you actually pay.

Use Percent off when the deal is advertised as a percentage — "20% off", "half price" (50% off), "save a third" (33% off). Use Amount off when it is a fixed sum — "$30 off", "save £15", or a voucher with a specific cash value. If you are not sure which gives a better deal, try both with the same price to compare.
Type the full pre-sale price in the first field and the discount value in the second. For a percentage, enter the number without the % symbol — for 25% off, just type 25. For a fixed amount, enter the cash value being removed from the price.
If tax applies at the checkout, enter the percentage in the Sales tax field. The result shows the final price including tax, the discount amount, how much you save, and the effective discount percentage — useful when comparing a fixed-amount deal against a percentage deal on the same item.

Store A offers 20% off a $399 TV; store B offers $60 off the same TV. Run both in the calculator — 20% saves $79.80, while $60 off is $60. The percentage deal is better here, but that is not always the case when the original prices differ.

An item is $250 after a 15% discount, but the checkout adds 8% sales tax. Enter: original price $294.12 (reverse-engineer the pre-discount), discount 15%, tax 8% — or just enter $250 as the "original" with 0% discount and tax 8% to check the all-in total: $270.

A store loyalty card gives 10% off everything. Check whether the annual membership fee is worth it by estimating your typical monthly spend, calculating what 10% saves per year, and comparing that against the fee.
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then divide by 100 to get the saving. Subtract that from the price to get the sale price. For example, 25% off $120 is a saving of $30, giving a sale price of $90. The calculator does this for you and also shows the formula, so you can verify the answer manually if needed.
A percent-off discount scales with the price: 25% off $200 saves more than 25% off $50. An amount-off discount is fixed: "$30 off" saves the same $30 regardless of the original price. When both are on offer for the same item, the one that saves more depends on the price — enter both in the calculator to compare directly.
Tax is charged on the discounted price — the amount you actually pay — not on the original price. This is how most jurisdictions handle sales tax on marked-down goods. The calculator follows this convention, applying tax to the post-discount price.
Use the Percentage Calculator's "What % is X of Y" mode instead. Enter the saving as X and the original price as Y. For example, $30 off a $120 item = 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25% saving. This is useful for comparing a fixed-dollar promotion against a percentage-off offer at a competing store.
This tool applies one discount at a time. For stacked discounts — such as a store sale plus a coupon — apply the first discount, note the resulting price, then use that as the new "original price" and apply the second discount. Note that two 20%-off deals applied in sequence save less than 40% total; they compound.
