How to crop a JPEG image online

Choose your JPEG photo

Select Choose image or drag in a .jpg or .jpeg file. PNG and WebP images work too.

Set the crop area

Drag the corners to trim the edges, or drag inside the box to move the selection. Check the crop-size readout in pixels before saving.

Crop & download

Select Crop Image, then Download image. A JPEG input downloads as a cropped .jpg file; your original file stays unchanged.

Cropping a JPEG photo: a pixel-size example

Suppose your photo is 1200 × 800 pixels and you want to remove a distracting edge. Move the selection over the subject and check the crop-size readout. A selection of 900 × 600 pixels saves just that area; it does not shrink the whole 1200 × 800 photo into a smaller frame.

Keep your original file. The cropped copy has fewer pixels, and JPEG exports are re-encoded. Cropping cannot restore blurry detail or make a small photo suitable for a much larger print.

How to crop a photo on your phone

Tap Choose image and select a JPG, PNG or WebP from your device. Drag a corner handle to adjust the selection, or drag inside the box to move it. Tap Crop Image, then Download image. Your browser may save the copy to Downloads rather than your photo library.

If your phone supplies an HEIC file, convert or export it as JPEG first. If the preview cannot load, try a smaller supported image and close other memory-heavy browser tabs.

Should you crop, resize or compress?

Crop to remove part of the picture. Use the image resizer when you want to keep the whole picture but change its dimensions. Use the image compressor when your main goal is a smaller file for uploading.

For a website image, crop the composition first, resize if needed, then compress the final copy. Check the downloaded image before replacing your original.

How do I crop a photo into a square for a profile picture?

Drag the crop box on the preview and adjust it until the width and height in the crop-size readout are equal. There is no fixed square-ratio preset; use the pixel readout to check your selection. Position that box over the face or subject you want to keep, then apply and download. The saved image is exactly the square area you framed, which is ideal for avatars and profile photos on most social platforms.

Does cropping reduce quality?
